Sales of “Friends” DVDs Surge Amid Temporary Streaming Blackout

As has been widely reported, the still-popular sitcom Friends is in the midst of a five-month streaming drought as the show shifts from Netflix to HBO Max.

But diehard fans are unwilling to wait, as many have dusted off their old DVD boxed sets and even purchased cheap DVD players to keep watching reruns on-demand before the show debuts on HBO Max.

Kristen Massaro just bought a $30 DVD at Target to watch her old Friends DVDs on. “One thing that I had forgotten is that you have to get up and change the DVD every four or five episodes,” the 37-year-old says. “But I’d rather get my lazy butt off the couch than pay for HBO Max every month.” (For what it’s worth, HBO Max will cost $14.99 a month.)

In fact, The Wall Street Journal reports that Amazon sales of Friends DVD and Blu-ray boxed sets hit an ll-time high in late December and January as it exited Netflix’s queue.
