A thief who sawed and stole a Marilyn Monroe statue could face up to three years in jail, according to The Blast.
Austin Mikel Clay faces charges of both grand theft and vandalism.
The statue, part of a bigger public art piece at the Hollywood Gazebo located at Hollywood Boulevard and La Brea Avenues in Los Angeles.
Clay is thought to have scaled the structure, which celebrates women in film, until he reached the top and could saw off the Marilyn Monroe portion. “I am calling this the great Marilyn caper of 2019,” said Councilman Mitch O’Farrell. He more seriously added that “it is not okay to vandalize public art.”
A forensics expert working with the Los Angeles Police Department was able to find some fingerprints which could implicate Clay after climbing up a ladder provided by the fire department.
Clay will be arraigned on Tuesday.
