7 Songs That Aren’t as Romantic as They Sound

Just in time for Valentine’s Day, Mental Floss has compiled a list of seven songs that aren’t as romantic as they seem on first listen. Here they are:

  1. “More Than Words” by Extreme. Basically, it’s about how actions speak louder than words.
  2. “God Only Knows” by The Beach Boys. The first line in the song is literally: “I may not always love you.”
  3. “Leaving on a Jet Plane” by John Denver. The song points out that it’s hard to look forward to an engagement when you don’t know if your beloved will be faithful while he’s out of town.
  4. “There She Goes” by The LA’s. Lead guitarist John Byrne, who co-wrote the song, claims, “It’s just a love song about a girl that you like but never talk to.”
  5. “Here Comes Your Man” by The Pixies. Frontman Black Francis told NME in 1989 that the song is ”about winos and hobos traveling on the trains, who die in the California Earthquake.”
  6. “Got to Get You Into My Life” by The Beatles. Paul McCartney claims the 1966 song is “actually an ode to pot.”
  7. “Always” by Bon Jovi. The lyrics tell the full story of a Romeo whose heart is bleeding after his lover left and moved on to someone else.
